Why don’t fans want K-pop actors like BTS and Blackpink in the 2023 Super Bowl?

ARIZONA, USA: With the Super Bowl fast approaching, everyone is eager to find out who will be the halftime headliner. The last edition was quite starry because we had the collaboration of Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. And for the 2023 Super Bowl, they roped Rihanna. However, the potential roster of NFL artists, including K-pop superstars like BTS and Blackpink, has the internet divided.

Although Blackpink and BTS are currently two of the biggest K-pop groups in the world, many are concerned if they join the Super Bowl 2023 halftime show. K-pop is still stereotyped as feminine or gay. by several non-fans, K-pop fans don’t want their favorites to face racism from NFL fans. Many have also pointed out that the NFL fans who will make up the majority of Super Bowl 2023 audiences are white men who can be racist.

K-pop groups are criticized by local fans

The concern of K-pop fans is justified because we already have netizens posting tweets like “Would there be a kpop band at the Superbowl, no one would watch this shit.” Another non-fan commented, “Who is going to tell kpop fans that they need multiple hits to do the SuperBowl.” While another user was right about the racist aspect, they still stereotyped K-pop fans, “Yeah, let’s let a kpop group whose primary audience is teenage girls and gays super bowl for millions of people. ‘adult men (mostly white) who are hypercritical about everything.’

One fan tweeted, “I’m sorry but if you’re against kpop bands performing in bigger US shows I’m sorry but you’re racist cause what’s the difference between them and all other foreign artists that happen at the Super Bowl??? Another said: “If we get a bts and blackpink collab scene or just them playing together or even interactions with each other if they play the super bowl together it’s gonna be so powerful you don’t understand the internet is gonna break and the earth can reset, HISTORY will be rewritten.”
