Bad gal Tkay with bad guy Billie? You just love to see it!
Billie Eilish is currently on tour with her candid and complex album happier than ever across North America, and last weekend she was joined by a very special guest: Australian Tkay Maidza.
“The shows have been unreal. It was one of those things like, ‘It makes sense and you gotta do it! ‘” Tkay told triple j Good Nights, traveling between shows. “It’s a great opportunity and she’s an amazing artist – very inspiring.”
Talk the Game, Recognize the Game. As Tkay herself shared on social media, she and Yung Baby Tate got to perform their collaboration ‘Kim’ live for the first time, and rocked the whole arena of Atlanta with their phones. Watch and swipe below.
Tkay explains that she got the last-minute call to support Billie — on dates in Atlanta, Charlotte, Pittsburgh — after other scheduled artists had to pull out due to COVID.
“We were asked the day before [Atlanta] if we could do it. I had to fly out at midnight that night to play,” says Tkay.
Interestingly, Tkay has a bit of shared history with the 20-year-old world-famous pop sensation. “I’ve known her for four years, we have so many mutual friends.”
After becoming common followers on social media (“I started following her, she immediately followed me. I’m like ‘omg you are the best. She is ‘omg YOU ARE the best’“), they had the chance to meet IRL Down Under in 2019.
“I went to see her show in Melbourne when she came to Australia last time. And it was almost like ‘Hey best friend I haven’t seen in three years!'” laughs Tkay.
“Also his drummer was my old drummer when I was on tour in the United States five years ago. A lot of his team is related and I know them one way or another. So yeah , that was really cool because it’s almost complete.”
“I’m honestly very proud of her and it’s crazy that she literally is who she is and that I can put on a show with her. It’s so unreal and I’m so grateful.”
triple j has been playing and supporting Tkay for years – ever since she was a 16-year-old Adelaide teenager uploading tracks to triple j Unearthed – but her profile has steadily risen overseas thanks to her three volumes last year was weird EP. In reality, Flight. 3 also won its first ARIA Award last year. (For a long time, IMHO)
She’s an established festival favorite here in Australia, but it’s amazing to see Tkay slaying big US stages and winning over audiences who may not be as educated on her edgy mix of rap, RnB and of neo-soul.
Tkay takes last year was weird while touring the United States in March and April. Billie Eilish will be in Australia later this year, on tour happier than ever From September onwards. See both sets of dates below.
