Several films to watch at the 2021 Fantasia Film Festival

It’s August 4th, which means we’re less than 24 hours away from the start of Fantasia Film Festival 2021. If you’re watching the festival schedule and deciding which films to watch, let us help you complete your list.

Fighter

South Korea is a country little known for boxing. Yet the metaphor of in-ring combat and life is a universal theme. You see it in real life in the UFC and in professional boxing, and it’s been done hundreds of times in Hollywood. So the idea (on paper) of a North Korean refugee using boxing to survive in South Korea is a perfect combination. Sports drama always has a tendency to pull on the sensitive chords, and it looks no different. However, the wellness nature of these films is still a draw. Get tickets here.

Love, life and goldfish

Now, even as an avid Asian film viewer, never in my life have I seen an Asian musical film before. So, Love, life and goldfish is an intriguing film because it is a musical. It’s not just a musical, but it’s a musical full of J-pop songs. Not to mention that the film sticks to its manga roots by inserting a lot of manga into the film. Fantasia Film Festival describes the film as “a heartwarming movie that will smack you with an uncontrollable smile,”And that’s good enough for me. Get tickets here.

Midnight in a perfect world

Filipino cinema has not achieved international fame since the 1970s with Lino Brocka and his classic film, Manila in the claws of the light. However, Dodo Dayao is quickly becoming the next great director of Filipino cinema. So of course I should recommend this creepy one, Purge-meets-monster homeland movie. Get tickets here.

Midnight

Don’t breathe was so good because it subverts the idea that having a disability makes you weak. Kwon Oh-seung Midnight follows a similar theme, but with reversed roles. So, the idea of a serial killer chasing a girl who can’t hear the world around him seems like a very exciting idea. Even the scene with the sound level meter in the trailer had put me on the edge of my seat. Get tickets here.

Prisoners of Ghost Country - Nicolas Cage

Prisoners of Ghost Country

Nicolas Cage has taken on eclectic roles in recent years. Between Color out of space, Willy’s Wonderland, and the critically acclaimed Pork, Nicolas Cage isn’t afraid to take on weird roles because, well… he’s a weird guy indeed. However, reading this in the description of Fantasia, “two American men, Hero (Nicolas Cage) and Psycho (Nick Cassavettes), enter a Japanese bank in Samurai Town brandishing weapons and shouting “Banzai!”.”As DiCaprio put it so well in Django Unchained, “you had my curiosity, but now you have my attention.” Get tickets here.

Sadness

After discovering Detention at last year’s Fantasia Film Festival, I’m ready to see what another Taiwanese horror film would look like at this year’s festival. Judging by the Rob Jabbaz trailer Sadness, this is a zombie movie that will bring blood, blood and terror. Who doesn’t love a good zombie movie? Get tickets here.

Raging fire

Donnie Yen is one of the most legendary actors in Hong Kong action cinema. So every time you see it in an action movie, it’s always a treat. It’s even more enjoyable when you combine Donnie Yen with the late Benny Chan, who has made such captivating crime thrillers as New detective story and Invisible target. Recently, Yen said that Raging fire “will set a new standard [in] contemporary action films. We cannot wait. Get tickets here.

Septet: The History of Hong Kong

Speaking of legendary Hong Kong cinema, Septet: The History of Hong Kong brings together seven of the most prolific and richest directors in Hong Kong history. Sammo Hung (Dragons forever), Ann Hui (The people of the boat), Patrick Tam (Days of being wild), Yuen Woo Ping (Iron monkey), Johnnie To (The heroic trio), Ringo Lam (Full contact) and Tsui Hark (Once upon a time in china) direct all of these personal and deep segments in this anthology film celebrating Hong Kong. Get tickets here.

Of course, these are just a few of the movies that we look forward to. If you want to check out the full list of films at Fantasia Film Festival 2021, check them out. here.
