North Penn scores 6 in 5th to win suspended District 1-6A 2nd round match against Owen J. Roberts – PA Prep Live

TOWAMENCIN >> The North Penn softball team quickly picked up a District 1-6A second round victory over Owen J. Roberts after their bout resumed Thursday afternoon.

The second-seeded Knights scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning – Julia Shearer’s three-RBI double followed by two hitters later by Annabelle Smink’s scoreless single for a 10-0 win over visiting the # 15 Wildcats.

“I think I had a 1-1 count so that’s my count,” Smink said. “And then I was just trying to find my land and drive it.”

The contest was halted after the start of fourth Wednesday with North Penn leading 4-0 after thunderstorms hit the area.

The win allows the Knights (20-1) to advance to their fourth straight quarterfinal in District 1, as the NP plays host to No.7 Haverford at 4 p.m. Thursday. Haverford edged 23rd Bensalem 2-1 on Wednesday.

North Penn and the Fords met in the regular season on April 24, and the Knights earned a 4-1 victory at home.

“We’ve had our energy and now we have to keep going until the next game,” Smink said.

Owen J. Roberts ended his season at 12-7, with the Wildcats claiming their first district victory since 2017 in a 5-1 Monday first-round victory over Truman.

“I told the girls to hold their heads up, they have had a great season,” said OJR coach Stacey Kushner. “We had so many injuries and illnesses that we overcame a lot. And not just to host the first round, to get here, it’s kind of an accomplishment. “

Smink had a single with two strikeouts in the bottom of the fourth, but OJR’s Natalie Alldred put out the next hitter. North Penn’s Mady Volpe finished a 1-2-3 first of the fifth with back-to-back strikeouts.

Bri Wilmot and Gianna Cimino started the bottom of the fifth with straight singles. Carley DiGiuseppe’s offer for a three-run left homer was just a foul, but Bloomfield senior commissary stepped in to charge the goals. Next at bat, Sophia Collins dropped a single down center left, scoring Wilmot for a 5-0 lead.

Rachel Lowry’s single RBI bunt brought in Cimino as Shearer cleared the basepaths as he tore a brace down center right for North Penn to lead 9-0.

After a jump to first, Smink adopted the 10-point rule with his single tackle at center Shearer while a mistake placed Smink in second.

“They definitely threw a curve ball at us – or the weather did,” Kushner said. “Being here, we got home around 8:30 pm (Wednesday night), I think, to school, but you can’t blame that on the way we played today. We were here yesterday, they basically had four unearned runs and today they hit the ball. There was nothing we could really do.

On Wednesday, North Penn took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third – the top two on Sarah Sabocsik’s single two-RBI with another goal as Smink hit an error. Cimino went 4-0 in the third with an RBI brace.
