K-Pop’s global success seen through album chart, video platform and record salesNews

K-Pop is no longer enjoyed only by Koreans, but has become an important part of global culture.
Proof of this is that K-Pop superstars BTS have extended their long streak on the US Billboard charts.
Since Tuesday, the group’s songs “My Universe” and “Butter” have spent 26 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart, ranking 24th and 34th respectively this week.
Following in their footsteps, another K-Pop group, Stray Kids, topped the Billboard 200 chart on Tuesday, making it the third time a South Korean artist or group has reached the top spot.

K-pop stars not only catch the ears of global audiences, but also their eyes.
According to an analysis by a Korean media outlet, Wednesday’s JoongAng Daily videos on YouTube received a total of 15 billion views from March 2021 to February 2022.
Surprisingly, Japan, not South Korea, had the most views with 2 billion.
India and Indonesia lag behind while South Korea falls outside the top five at 6th with 7 cent 68 million views.
Videos by other K-Pop artists, including Black Pink, Twice, ITZY, and Seventeen, were also viewed mostly by overseas audiences.

On the back of this global K-Pop craving, record sales are also skyrocketing.
The latest data from the Korea Customs Service shows that last year the number of albums sold by South Korean artists topped the 50 million mark for the first time, half of them overseas.
While only 23 countries imported South Korean albums in 2012, the figure has increased almost 4 times, to 88 countries, in 2021.
During the same period, South Korea’s record exports by value also increased exponentially.
While album exports amounted to around US$24 million in 2012, they jumped around 3 times to reach 74.5 million in 2019 and nearly 10 times to reach US$220 million in 2021, setting a new record.
