November is Ausmusic Month, which means it’s time to celebrate the best in Australian music!
Now in their 17th year, the J Awards celebrate originality, creativity, technical excellence and Australian music that has blown our minds and ears throughout 2021.
There are 30 nominees divided into five categories: Australian Album of the Year, Unearthed Artist of the Year, Australian Music Video of the Year, Double J Artist of the Year and the Well done.
There are a number of double nominees this year, including Genesis Owusu, The Avalanches, Amyl and The Sniffers, and King Stingray. But there are also a ton of first-time nominees in the mix, including hotshots from Unearthed and favorites from Double J, while dynamic debt albums from Baker Boy, Gretta Ray, Ruby Fields and Tones And. I serve to remind us of how much impact Australian music can have.
You might recognize two previous J Award winners. Middle Kids is in the running for Australian Album of the Year, the category they won in 2018 with their debut Lost friends, and Sanjay De Silva – the director behind 2019 J Award-winning Sampa The Great’s “Final Form” video is once again nominated in the music video pool for Jerome Farah’s music video “Concrete Jungle Fever”.
Returning for a third year, the Done Good Award recognizes individuals and initiatives who have made significant change, innovation, or uplifting the music community at large during another difficult year.
Going through the full list really reminds you of all the incredible work the Australian music scene has done despite 18 truly horrific months for the industry.
Pop the confetti and check out the full list of J Award nominees below! Join us when the winners are announced on Thursday November 18.

The J Awards started in 2005 with just one category: Australian Album of the Year. In 2008, it grew with the addition of unearthed Artist of the Year and Australian Music Video of the Year. Double J Artist of the Year was added in 2014 when the station launched, while Done Good was introduced in 2019.
Over the past 17 years, the J Awards have become a special part of the triple js calendar (and the Australian music industry at large). It’s a time when we can truly recognize the work of artists in a wide range of fields, creating works of art and special works that have both longevity and A-grade stamps throughout.
