There is a maknae and a leader in every K-pop group. The leader is usually one of the senior members, however, the maknae can also sometimes be the leader. In rare situations, no leader is appointed and the group simply works in unison. Leadership is a characteristic found in members of an idol group regardless of background, and it is essential for their interpersonal and professional relationships.
Here are nine K-pop star maknaes who display great leadership qualities and have a bit of everything.
1. Taiji Seo & Boys
Starting with the original K-pop group, Seo Taiji, the leader of the trio, is the younger of the other two members of the trio. Prominent maknae, as their careers attest, have done a good job of rewiring the Korean music industry in a way that allows it to address more relevant issues, primarily social criticism.
2. BTOB’s Sungjae
We all know Sungjae for his cruelty, but did you know that he was an acting leader of BTOB? In reality, because Minhyuk and Eunkwang had gone on military service, Sungjae was chosen by chance to take the position of leader until his members returned. Despite the jokes, the members know their maknae better and wouldn’t trust him with the job unless he proves himself worthy.
3. Hwasa by MAMAMOO
If you’re unfamiliar with MAMAMOO and meeting Hwasa for the first time, you’ll immediately assume she’s the boss. Because she is shameless herself and constantly speaks her thoughts, she has a strong and confident personality. She is also very kind and smart, which makes her the perfect choice for second place!
4. WINNER’s Seungyoon
Another maknae leader alert has arrived! Seungyoon was WINNER’s leader from the start, but it wasn’t until Nam Taehyun left the group that he also became the maknae. In any case, he fits well with this aspect, since he has demonstrated his leadership potential over the years. Being the youngest now may be his reward for all his hard work so far.
5. GOT7’s Yugyeom
Jay B thinks Yugyeom has what it takes to be a leader. In fact, when the two formed their sub-unit Jus2, the maknae was made commander. Yugyeom’s leadership abilities, according to Jay B, are based on his ability to let the members be themselves. Giving members the freedom to channel their true selves requires a lot of faith and belief in them!
6. Girls’ Generation – TTS’
Seohyun is another idol who took a leadership position in a sub-unit. In fact, Taeyeon and Tiffany recognized and praised her abilities, and she was chosen to represent TTS. This is not surprising, since Seohyun has often demonstrated his selflessness, understanding, and composure.
7. BTS’s Jungkook
The golden maknae has a strong sense of leadership. While watching RM rap was the main reason Jungkook joined his current label, he continues to look up to his boss in other facets of life. This indicates that he understands what makes a strong leader and that channeling his inner leader is only a matter of time as he strives to learn more from RM.
8. BLACKPINK’s Lisa
Although the group did not have a leader, many fans enjoyed speculating who might fill the role if it became empty. Lisa’s name has been mentioned many times, and considering how her presence and aura dominates every stage she’s on and every individual she interacts with, it’s no surprise.
9. EXO’s Sehun
Sehun and Suho’s bromance is all about goals. On camera, we usually see them amusing, but there’s more to it. Suho remarked during one of EXO’s concerts that Sehun has often said that he would be a fantastic leader and wanted to give him that chance one day to see how good he would do. Now if the leader believes in his maknae then it’s a done deal
