BLACKPINK’s ‘BOOMBAYAH’ Becomes First K-Pop Track to Surpass 1.3 Billion Views on YT


South Korean girl group BLACKPINK added another feather to their crown with the group that made YouTube history with their debut music video. BLACKPINK’s first track on November 1 BOOMBAYAH surpassed 1.3 billion views on YouTube. This ultimately makes the MV the first K-pop music video in history to achieve the feat. The K-pop girl group released the song in August 2016.

BOOMBAYAH are the girl group of K-pop, BLACKPINK’s third music video to exceed 1.3 billion views. The first two tracks were DDU-DU DDU-DU and Kill this love. The South Korean girl group is currently the only K-pop artist in the industry to have reached the milestone with three different music videos.

Originally published on August 8, 2016, BOOMBAYAH thus garnered the highest views in just over five years, two months and 23 days to reach the goal. BLACKPINK on the same day took their official Instagram account and expressed their joy over it. They posted two pictures, the first of which is the MV poster with 1.3 billion written on it. The second photo is a screenshot of the MV on YouTube.

Meanwhile, BLACKPINK’s new songs have been breaking records since their release. Recently, the solo B-side of BLACKPINK’s youngest member Lisa, titled MONEY broke records on the official UK charts (which are generally considered the UK equivalent of the US Billboard charts), making her the first female K-pop solo artist to have a song for four consecutive weeks in the official singles ranking.

With just one album released since their debut in 2016, BLACKPINK has broken more than a dozen records with their group singles and solo projects. Marking the group’s first solo debut, Jennie broke records becoming the first Korean female artist to reach over 700 million views on YouTube with her single. Solo.
